Tutoring Programs

Students in our tutoring programs work one-on-one with a tutor, or in small groups, to address educational trouble spots, strengthen study skills, and navigate the academic rigors and social challenges of high school and middle school.

High School One-on-One Tutoring

Meets 6:00-7:30, Mondays at Jefferson Park, Tuesdays at 119 Windsor, and Wednesdays at Roosevelt Towers.

The High School One-on-One Tutoring program is for high school students who have expressed an interest in receiving help in one or more academic subjects. Students are matched with tutors based on academic needs, and tutoring pairs work together each week to strengthen the student’s aptitude in specific academic subjects.

Our high school program is offered three days a week at three tutoring centers and serves approximately 35 students in grades 9 through 12. Tutoring sessions are offered from October to January and from February to May.

In partnership with The Cambridge Housing Authority Work Force program, our high school tutoring centers are staffed with a site manager, site coordinators, and trained volunteers.

Program Structure

  • Organizing Myself Effectively
    Grades: 4-8
    Time: 5:30-6:00pm
This half-hour session helps prepare students for a productive and satisfying tutoring experience. Students learn to organize their homework assignments and prepare questions for their tutors about lessons they struggled with during the school day.
  • Collaborative Learning
    Grades: 4-6
    Time: 6:00-7:00pm
During this tutoring session, students develop their questioning skills to drive the learning process. Under the guidance of a tutor, students assemble in small groups of two to three to work on their homework assignments. Students learn to ask, explore, and answer questions about their assignments, helping them become better listeners, thinkers, speakers, and writers—the building blocks of academic success.
  • Personalized Tutoring
    Grades: 7-8
    Time: 6:00-7:00pm
Many students at this age start to fall behind as academic rigors and social pressures intensify. Tutors work with students to help them navigate the challenges of an increased workload, multiple classes, and social issues that result in academic struggles. With one tutor for every one to two students, the program ensures that every student receives personalized instruction and support.
