How It Works
As a Tutoring Plus volunteer, you will work one-on-one with the same student each week (or with the same small group of students) for the duration of the program (between six weeks and four months). We offer two cycles of tutoring sessions during each school year: October-January and February-May.
We offer volunteer opportunities in two tutoring programs and three enrichment programs. Volunteers only commit to one day a week.
- Middle and High School Tutoring: Students assemble each evening in our six tutoring centers across Cambridge for a four-month tutoring cycle. Site coordinators and site managers make sure students are ready to work when you arrive.
Middle school programs run from 5:30 to 7:00 for the students and 6:00 to 7:00 for the volunteers. Programs are held at Fletcher Maynard Academy on Monday and Wednesday, Cambridgeport on Tuesday, and King Open on Thursday. High school programs are 6:00 to 7:30 for both volunteers and students. - Enrichment Programs: As an enrichment program tutor, you'll work with a small group of students and assist the instructor in leading fun science experiments and solving engineering problems. MCAS tutors work one-on-one with a student, teaching strategies and best practices to solve mathematical word problems.
Enrichment Programs are 5:30 to 7:00 for both volunteers and students.
Step 1: The application process
Submit a volunteer application and contact us with any questions. Once we review your application, we will contact you to schedule an interview with Tutoring Plus staff. If you're not sure which program suits your interests and abilities, our staff will help you select the program that's right for you during the interview process.
Step 2: Orientation and training
Before you begin tutoring, you will participate in a 90-minute orientation session. During the orientation you will learn more about Tutoring Plus' programs and a typical evening working with students. The orientation will cover all logistics (for example, what to do if you're absent, where to get resources and supplies, how to be notified of center closings due to holidays and snow).
Additional training will be offered throughout the school year, providing you with the tools and techniques to be an effective tutor.
Step 3: Matching you to your student
Because the quality of the relationship you build with your student is key to your student's success, for most programs, we carefully match you with your tutee before your service begins. We'll provide you with background information on the student prior to the first session so you'll have a good understanding of his or her academic weaknesses, learning style, and personality before you meet.
